Making innovation everyone’s job

Building an organization where innovation is an everywhere, all-the-time capability

In a recent study, 79 percent of CEOs listed innovation as a top 3 priority. Leaders know that innovation is the only insurance against irrelevance, the only way to deliver above-average returns, and the only guarantee of long-term customer loyalty. Yet in another study, 94 percent of CEOs said they were dissatisfied with their company’s innovation performance.

This shouldn’t be surprising, as few organizations have taken a systemic approach to making innovation a core competence. Frontline employees haven’t been trained to think like business innovators, teams struggle to carve out time and money for experimentation, risk-taking isn’t rewarded, and leaders are not held accountable for the innovation performance of their teams.

To rev up growth and boost margins, leaders at all levels must play a proactive role in ensuring that every element of their company’s management model—training, goal-setting, resource allocation, compensation and performance management—facilitates (rather than frustrates) breakthrough innovation.

What’s true for the economy is true for every company in it: innovation powers productivity—margins, revenue per employee, and return on assets. That’s why innovation must be an intrinsic and instinctive capability in every organization. Innovation isn’t a side show; it’s the only show.
